Benton is a small, rural, unincorporated Mono County located on the far eastern edge of the county about 32 miles north of Bishop on U.S. Highway 6.

Benton residents prize their wide-open views of both the Sierra to the west and the White Mountains to the east. The White Mountains, home of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, towers ten thousand feet above the community.

Formerly called Benton Station, Benton lies at an elevation of 5,387 feet. Benton’s population was 280 at the last U.S. Census.

Benton is comprised of residents who do most of their work and business in Bishop due to its close proximity to Benton, along with retirees. Benton is also the home of the Utu Utu Gwaitu Tribe, also called the Benton Paiute Tribe and the Benton Paiute Reservation.

Benton is also known as Benton Hot Springs because of the hot springs that well up beneath the community, feeding a small stream and pong, along with a renovated resort that once again bears this name.

Benton was once a small mining town with up to 5,000 inhabitants. Many of the original buildings still remain, as visitors and residents see on a drive through the town, where the old grocery store and gas station fronts still greet the modern day driver.

Benton is in the Eastern Sierra Unified School District, linked to the western edge of the county through this district. An elementary school, Edna Beaman Elementary, is located in town. Secondary and high school students are bused to Bishop for their education.
