COLEVILLE

Coleville is one of three Mono County communities located at the northern end of the county, where the lush, green Antelope Valley is watered by the West Walker River.

Located about 90 miles north of Mammoth Lakes along the West Fork of the Walker River, Coleville lies at an elevation of 5,141 feet and had a population of about 500 residents at the last Census.

Coleville’s economy is dominated by agriculture and ranching and the community has strong ties to early Mono County history. Coleville was named after California’s first congressman, Cornelius Cole, who arrived with a brother during the gold rush and established a law firm in San Francisco before entering politics.

But Coleville is also close to a growing metropolitan region, the Carson Valley. Gardnerville, Nevada is only 30 miles to the north and provides access to modern big box stories and other amenities. Rapidly-growing Reno, with a booming technology and recreation culture is only another half hour beyond that.

The close proximity to the Carson Valley’s retail, business and medical services, along with a growing arts and culture scene, makes Coleville an ideal place to live for those who want the best of both worlds.

The U.S. Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center is located  in the Sierra near Bridgeport and the Sonora Pass area and Coleville hosts a growing housing complex for the military base.

Coleville has an elementary and a California Distinguished High School and is connected to both the Carson Valley and Lancaster by a bus system that runs along the U.S. Highway 395 corridor several days a week.

Coleville has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, but not hot, summers and cool but rarely cold, winters. The community is flanked on the west by the Sierra range, with easy access to hiking and off road trails, fishing, and bird and wildlife watching.
