Mono City is a small, residential community on the northwest shore of Mono Lake just a few minutes north of Lee Vining at the junction of U.S. Highway 395 and S.R. 167.

The community lies at an elevation of 6,768 feet.

Home to about 172 rugged residents, Mono City denizens live in one of the county’s more moderate climates, where growing a garden is possible.

Residents prize their rural lifestyle, their wide-open spaces and what is quite probably has some of the best views in the state, if not the country.

To the east, the rugged and remote White Mountains, home of the state’s second highest peak, White Mountain, dominates the skyline.

To the south, the iconic tufa spires and turquoise crystalline waters of the 70-square mile inland sea called Mono Lake fill the Mono Basin, providing a critical stopover for migrating birds and a lifeline to the entire population of California Gulls, which nest safe from predators on the two islands in the lake.

To the southwest, the high Sierra, dominated by June Mountain, Bloody Mountain, Mount Morrison and dozens more, fill the sky.

Most of Mono City’s working residents commute to work in Mammoth or to other jobs within Mono County.
