Topaz is Mono County’s most northernmost community and is located only a few miles from the southern edge of the Nevada border, along the shores of Topaz Lake.

Topaz is about 92 miles north of Mammoth Lakes and about 31 miles south of Gardnerville, Nevada, which is the closest large community to Topaz.

The community sits at an elevation of 5,033 feet and had a permanent population of about 50 people at the last U.S. Census.

Topaz is probably best known as a border town resort and for Topaz Lake, a reservoir fed by the famous trout stream, the West Fork of the Walker River. The lake is well known for the quality of its angling opportunities, including winter fishing for Rainbow trout, Brown trout, and Smallmouth bass.

The community is also known for its quiet, rural nature and the spectacular sunsets and sunrises that turn the lake into a flaming tapestry of color.

The growing cities of the Carson Valley, including Gardnerville, Minden and Reno, are another attraction. The Carson Valley offers a full range of all services, including a growing arts and entrepreneur culture, as well as the highest quality medical services.

To the north and west, the recreational mecca of Lake Tahoe is only about 60 miles away.

To the south, the Eastern Sierra’s recreational options, from fishing the West Walker River to ATV riding in the nearby Sweetwater Mountains to backcountry hiking out of Bridgeport makes Topaz a community that has it all.

Topaz is a high desert community. It experiences dry, warm, summers with cool and sometimes cold, winters. Snow falls in Topaz but in most winters, it melts quickly.
