Chalfant

Chalfant is an unincorporated, rural community in Mono County located about 14 miles north of Bishop on U.S. Highway 6 at an elevation of 4,258 feet.

The population was 651 at the most recent U.S. Census.

Chalfant is a primarily residential community, surrounded by the agricultural and ranch lands of the Chalfant Valley.

Chalfant boasts many equestrian properties, and is beloved by its residents for its wide open landscape and less regulated lifestyle, the preponderance of sunny days, the views of the White Mountains towering above it and the views across the Owens Valley to the Sierra crest to the west.

The valley is famous for its high-protein alfalfa feed crop and other crops like garlic and carrots, which thrive in irrigated fields in the cool winters and hot summers.

Most residents of Chalfant commute to Bishop for work and school.

The community has experienced moderate growth over the past decade, due to its lower cost of living, its close proximity to Bishop and its wide-open rural nature.

Hammil Valley

Hammil Valley is an unincorporated community in Mono County It is located a few minutes north of Chalfant on U.S. Highway 6 at an elevation of 4593 feet.

Most of the residents of Hammil Valley also work or go to school in Bishop.
