WALKER

Walker is a small, unincorporated town in northern Mono County located about 84 miles north of Mammoth Lakes along U.S. Highway 395.

Walker sits at the head of the Antelope Valley where the West Fork of the Walker River emerges out of Walker Canyon to water the lush valley and fill nearby Topaz Lake.

Walker sits at 5,403 feet elevation and had a population of about 720 residents at the last U.S. Census.

The West Fork of the Walker River is a designated Wild and Scenic Walker River and it is famous for its native Lahontan Cutthroat trout fishing. It is also a popular kayaking destination, featuring miles of rolling, whitewater rapids.

The community’s economy is dominated by tourism and agriculture and ranching, but like nearby Coleville, Walker is close enough to the bustling Carson Valley region to also give residents easy access to the best medical, cultural and business amenities in the region.

At the same time, Walker is surrounded by the mountains of the high Sierra with easy access to some of the region’s most pristine and remote backcountry meadows, rivers and creeks, which includes some of the best hunting, fishing, and ATV/UTV routes in the county.

A vibrant Senior Center provides a central gathering place for the Walker area’s retirement community and the presence of nearby Carson Valley area medical facilities makes Walker an exceptional retirement area. Nearby Coleville schools are known for their academic and athletic success.

The town is also rich in history. It was likely named for pioneer Joseph R. Walker, who started his ascension of the Sierra Nevada range as part of a longer expedition and many Walker residents are third and fourth generation locals.
