Bridgeport is Mono County’s county seat. It lies about 54 miles north of Mammoth along U.S. Highway 395 in the gorgeous Bridgeport Valley.

Surrounded by the towering, snow-covered Sawtooth Range, the lush, irrigated valley is sometimes called “Little Switzerland” for its spectacular scenery.

Formerly known as Big Meadows, Bridgeport lies at an elevation of 6,463 feet. The population was 575 at the last U.S. Census.

The town’s economy is mostly tourism-based, with a strong emphasis also on agriculture and ranching. Numerous state, county and federal government offices, including the California Highway Patrol and the U.S. Forest Service are located in Bridgeport, diversifying the economy.

Bridgeport has an elementary school.

Plans are underway to locate a medical clinic within the community.

Bridgeport is rich in history, as well as scenery. The first post office at Bridgeport opened in 1864 and the Mono County Courthouse is the oldest continuously operating courthouse in California. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Bridgeport is also close to the well-preserved ghost town of Bodie.  Bridgeport is well-known for its trout streams and lakes, including the Bridgeport Reservoir, Twin Lakes, Virginia Lakes, Green Creek, the East Walker River, the West Walker River and numerous small tributaries and backcountry lakes.

Some of the Sierra’s best backcountry hiking trails radiate out from Bridgeport, giving hikers access to Yosemite National Park as well as millions of acres of pristine wilderness.

The Sweetwater Mountains dominate the northern horizon and provide excellent OHV riding.

The nearby U.S. Marine Corps’ Mountain Warfare Training Center trains hundreds of Marines every year in the remote Sierra backcountry. The base is located approximately 20 miles west of Bridgeport on State Route 108, which is also called the Sonora Pass Road.

Bridgeport is also the home of the Bridgeport Indian Colony.
