Swall Meadows is a small, unincorporated Mono County community located almost exactly halfway between Mammoth Lakes and Bishop off of Lower Rock Creek Road.

Swall Meadows is a residential community for both Bishop to the south, and Mammoth Lakes to the north. Swall Meadows residents also  include some second homeowners and retirees who love the rural, close-knit nature of the community.

The population was 220 during the last U.S. Census.

The community sits nearly at the top of the Sherwin Grade, which connects the Owens Valley to the Long Valley area near Crowley Lake. The community is set between roughly between 6,000 and 7,000 feet in elevation and experiences hot summers and cold winters, although snow is generally light even during the winter.

Residents have some of the best views in the county, with sweeping vistas south toward the Sierra crest above Bishop and east across the Owens Valley to the White Mountains.

Because of the community’s setting, residents often chose if they are going to do their business and shopping in Mammoth, or, Bishop, depending on weather.

In the winter, access to Mammoth can be more challenging due to road conditions; in the summer, Bishop temperatures can hit the triple digits, making Mammoth a more desirable place to spend the day.

Swall Meadows is accessed from “Old Highway 395,” now called Lower Rock Creek Road, which leaves U.S. Highway 395 just south of Toms Place and enters U.S. Highway again a few miles north of Bishop.

Swall Meadows is also well known as an important deer migration route for the Round Valley Mule deer herd, which cherish the grazing in the meadow and apple falls from the old orchard trees.

On February 6, 2015, Swall Meadows was ravaged by the Round Fire, which burned 7,000 acres and destroyed 40 homes, all but one of them in Swall Meadows. One home in the neighboring community of Paradise was also lost.

Many residents returned and are rebuilding but it will be some years before the community fully recovers.
